About Sons D'Aqui

Savour an authentic immersive sound experience. With Sons D´Aqui you will have the opportunity to discover, and above all become familiar with, the animal sound universe. Much more than variations in air pressure, sound is a demonstration of the seasons’ dynamics, habitat biodiversity, the day/night changes… the existence of a world revolving around a sun.

Soundscapes

From macro to micro acoustics

Perennial Activities

Ria Formosa Woods

1000094416
Enjoy a sound-immersive experience of the morning chorus at the heart of Natural Park Ria Formosa's woods. From night dwellers to morning creatures, be it Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, all you have to do is listen.

Kestrels and Partridges

oplus_1
Occasionally certain species thrive in highly anthropic environments. Such is the case with abandoned quarries. In the heart of Barrocal Algarvio, one can find such a landscape where birds of prey, swallows and partridges abound and monopolize the ether with their distinctive shrieks.

Estuary, Golf Fields and Tertiary dunes

Mergulhao pequeno
The West limit of the Natural Park “Ria Formosa” is a combination of several biotopes due to the highly dynamic landscape as well as the man driven activities. Here, golf-courses with vast grass areas intermitted by fresh-water lakes neighbour maritime pine tree woods and mature estuarine sandy systems. Mostly at dusk, pre-roosting avian species bid us goodnight while the sun sets behind tall vegetation-covered dunes.

Dusks

PNGFoto crepusculo 300x300
A period shrouded in magic and sonic mystery. Large flocks of birds in the dormitories; "The Hour of the Bat"; the chirping of Crickets announcing themselves between the audible and the ultrasonic; flocks of Flamingos in flight; nocturnal, almost silent, birds of prey; Nightjars with their percussive song. Closing the experience in the "dead of night".

Seasonal Activities

Winter evenings

Mole-crickets and other stridulating insects.

Traca mosaico
Before the rainy season actually starts in the South of Portugal, evenings are crowded by moths, crickets and other stridulating insects, communicating in the human´s audible frequency. Knowing the source of so many sounds can turn periods of darkness from scary into stimulating adventures.

September / November

The deer rutting and the beasts of Algarve twilights

Oplus_131072
During the short southern summer nights, Red deer claim their place as the largest dwellers of the Algarve Mountains. Competing with each other, stags utter their rutting calls and fence with their antlers, offering a show to the ubiquitous wild boar and whomever decides to show up

February / March

Amphibians, Batrachians and Foxes

Sapo Corredor - Epidalea calamita
After the rains, toads, frogs and tree frogs start their reproductive frenzy. Mostly gathering around the same ponds where they were not more than tadpoles, being as loud as possible, they even superimpose over the occasional screams of foxes in heat.

Lecture

Subject: Aural Cleaning Methods

oppo_32
An interactive talk introducing listeners to Murray Schafer’s methods of aural cleaning. References to John Cage and Trevor Cox enrich the awareness of sonic tourism, culminating in a sound walk that deepens the exploration of the theme.

Testimonies from our Sound Explorers

What was more enjoyable about the experience?

“The guide is super friendly and nice. The possibility to focus on sounds, and to be able to distinguish sounds. Being in nature. The meditative aspect of it. The feeling of being explorers is really nice. Really taking the time to listen and be with our environment. Connecting was worth it.”

“The Slow pace; having time to listen and observe; the guide’s enthusiasm and knowledge about the topic; the small group, only talking with each other at the end; the group games.”

“To experience, for the first time, amplified nature sounds with the radio equipment. The great organization and knowledge from the guide”

“Hearing sounds with such high detail and volume, as if you’re a (non-human) animal – much more connected to nature.”
